CVC: Indications

  • Hemodynamic monitoring
  • Administration of caustic medications
  • Parenteral nutritional support
  • Hemodialysis or other extracorporeal therapy
  • Transvenous pacing
  • Venous access**

**Typically last resort, consider EJ or US guided IV placement if PIV access otherwise difficult

Contraindications

Coagulopathy and thrombocytopenia are discussed elsewhere, Relative contraindications include but are not limited to:

  • Anatomic abnormality precluding placement
  • Hardware precluding placement
  • Thrombosis or candidate vessel or proximally
