Paracentesis: Indications
Indications for paracentesis include:
- Decompensated cirrhosis
- New onset ascites
- Symptomatic ascites
- Concern for SBP
- Hepatic encephalopathy
- Pre-exisiting ascites with hospital admission*
There are no true absolute contraindications.
Peritoneal carcinomatosis requires caution but can be done, assessing the local vasculature with a linear probe and doppler is critical.
Scars, ileus with large dilated loops, or large visible bruising should also be considered when risk:benefit of the procedure.
